EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT THE WEATHER... WILLIS H. CARRIER DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT
Imagine how different the world would be today without air conditioning! For centuries,
man tried fans, ice and other primitive methods in a vain attempt to gain relief from the heat. But it wasn't until 1902, when a young, Cornell-trained engineer named Willis Haviland
Carrier invented mechanical air conditioning, that effective indoor climate control became a reality. Willis Carrier did for indoor climate control what Alexander Graham Bell did for
communication and Henry Ford did for transportation: he changed the way we live.
Carrier called his invention the "Apparatus for Treating Air." It was not until 1906 that
the term "air conditioning" was used. Air conditioning made its public debut in 1922 at Grauman's Metropolitan Theatre in Los Angeles. The Rivoli Theatre on Broadway's Times
Square lured patrons in from the heat in 1925 with the promise of a "refrigerating plant" to keep them cool. In fact, air conditioning saved the movie theater business during the
hot summer months when attendance had traditionally dropped off.
Although air conditioning was the company's claim to fame, Carrier Corporation is now renowned for all of the elements that
make up a total home indoor comfort system: furnaces, heat pumps, electronic air cleaners, humidifiers, heat recovery ventilators and zoning systems as well as central air conditioning systems
and room air conditioners.
And Carrier's products are among the most energy-efficient in the industry according to standard rating systems. For instance, the Synergy 2000(TM) central
air conditioner has an efficiency rating of up to 17.1 when combined with the proper fan coil, more than seven points higher that the 10.0 rating mandated by Federal energy standards.
