OG&E Heat Pump Information
Electric Heat Pump
A Heat Pump is a year-round system that provides heat in the winter and cool in the summer while conserving energy. The
Heat Pump operates as a conventional air conditioner in the summer to cool your home. This is one of two units and is located outside your home. It contains the
compressor, outdoor coil and fan and is very similar to your existing central air conditioner. The second unit is located indoors and is responsible for heating.
This unit resembles a warm air furnace and contains a coil, blower, supplemental heaters and an air filter. A wall thermostat automatically controls the inside air temperature.
Because the Heat Pump does not create heat like common furnaces, this system is more energy efficient.
Instead the Heat Pump captures existing heat in the air, and utilizes it to produce two or more units of heat for each single unit of energy needed to operate the unit.
Some of the benefits of a Heat Pump include:
- Better comfort through even temperatures,
- Humidity control,
- Less temperature swings,
- Lower operating cost because of heating efficiencies of up to 300%,
- Declining electric rates and increasing gas rates,
- Reliability - Heat Pumps have long lives due to the reduced wear from less on/off cycling,
- Cleanliness which produces better indoor air quality reducing allergies, and
- Increased safety - no flames, no pilot light, no fumes from carbon monoxide, and no combustion process.
